Have started on my Learning of Photoshop skills for my Digital Graphics part of my course. I have learnt a good deal of stuff today, even though I have already used Photoshop before in previous courses. Today I have been taught:
- How to create a new project, learning how to use the different pre-sets to my advantage and learning the difference between mm and pixels.
- How to unlock the background layer, as well as an explanation as to what they are.
- How to select a colour, as well as how to fill a page with a colour and gradient, changing the look of the product.
- How to use the text tool, learning how to change the font and size on the fly.
- How to resize and move objects such as text.
- And what different file types there are, showing off PNG, JPEG and Photoshop Document (PSD).
As well as learning what some of the different sidebar tools do thanks to a small time for experimenting with our throwaway project from today.
The result from my experimentation gave me this:
Log 2: 18th of April, 2013
Have learnt how to use Drop Shadows from todays lesson, as well as having started using my photoshop skills to good effect, creating a mock Business card and Flyer for Page 45, a local comics shop.
Log 3: 24th of April, 2013
I've also learnt some more regarding the Magic Wand tool and inserting pictures, resulting in this realistic look of modern life in Manhattan:
Log 4: 2nd of May, 2013
Today I've learnt how to use the Marquee tool, the paintbrush, as well as learning how to use the history tool to go back some steps and how to use the opacity tool. This culminated in an info-graphic on some of the students that I work around.
Log 5: 8th of May, 2013
Learned a great deal about different types of compression, such as the difference between Lossy and Lossless types, as well as TIFF. I have also updated my Info graphic from before with a new title and added information:
Log 6: 23rd of May, 2013
Having worked on Texture Overlays, Clipping Masks and the Pen tool the last couple of weeks, I was tasked with creating a minimalist poster for the game I created, which I took to with haste. I used the skills I had picked up to my fullest, adding a blood texture to the title at the bottom and using the pen tool to make the eyes with ease.
Log 7: 6th June, 2013
Having finished work on Airbrushing people, I was tasked afterward to finish creating my poster for the gaming company I decided on. I started by sketching out the poster to come up with a design, taking inspiration from Halo 4's ARG (Alternate Reality Game) and just placing the Didact symbol in the centre of the poster. I created the poster by first uploading the picture to Photoshop to work from, then using the Pen tool to create the symbol by hand, crafting each piece and colouring it as needed, while I used the Paint Bucket tool to make the background black. After making the symbol, I placed a static overlay on it, to give it more of a digital feel, as well as using a basic font coloured silver to stand in for a Halo font for the poster.
Final log, Evaluation: 12th June 2013
My first piece was a new logo for 343 industries, the company that made Halo 4. I started off by sketching out several designs, trying to keep as close to the Halo font as I could. I finished on making the 4 and i combined using a little bit of shifting, making the dot of the i into a forerunner symbol. I then took the sketch and took it into photoshop on a 10cm by 10 cm document, giving it a Purple/Blue background with the paint bucket on a separate layer which I then lowered in opacity so I could see the sketch. I then used the Pen tool in shape mode to craft out each piece of the logo, colouring them Silver to cut out some of the colouring. Then I gave the pieces a black outline, following the lines given on the sketch. I then gave different colours to certain pieces, such as Blue for the Covenant, Green for the UNSC and Orange for Forerunner. I finished it off by compressing the image so that the layers were done as one, making it easier to render and make into a JPEG.
Overall, I feel that this image went well, but I had some difficulty with the creation and I feel that it could have been better.
Next, I created a minimalized poster for one of 343 industries games, Halo 4. Again, I started off by sketching out a poster, this time taking memory of Halo 4's ARG and using the Didact symbol as my basis. Once again, I pasted the sketch into photoshop and let a new layer for the background, this time black. After making the background clearer, I used the Pen tool again on Shape mode, this time using Black and Orange to craft the Didact symbol by hand. I then gave the image a Static overlay and added the title below it to finish the product.
This is my best crafted of the pieces, and I feel it went very well, coming out exactly as I wanted it to.
The last piece that I did was a Web banner for Halo Waypoint, which is 343 industries main website. After looking over the website itself and seeing what needed to be made, I started crafting it all by hand within photoshop. I used my custom logo within the picture, while using the pen tool again to make a box for all of the tabs to go in, adding the company at the top with the font tool, and then finally adding a space overlay to the purple background to make it feel more like the space theme of the original site.
This is my most "meh" of the work. There's a lot of stuff I could do better, but I feel that trying to do it would just take to long for a small amount.
